According to WorldConnect database, Philip was the 11th child of Richard and Jane Briggs, or Philip and Mary E. (Fry) Briggs, of North Carolina. The family moved to Bates Co., Missouri about 1867-69. Philip and Elizabeth had 11 children: [born in Brown Co. Henry Isaiah Widner; Arthur Lee 1864-1939; William Henry 1866-1942; Jesse Walter 1869-1877; Lillian Viola 1872-1891; Mary Cordelia 1874-1951 m. Jesse Strosnider; Maude Effie 1876-1966 m. Arthur Elmer Glaser; Philip Orville 1879-1955; Clyde Waldon 1881-1917; and Ernest Clifton 1882-1883.

 In the 1860 census for Lee township, Brown Co., Illinois, Phillip Briggs is a farmer, 24 born in Illinois; wife E. N. is 20, born Kentucky; and their children are Laura, 3, and E.C., male,  1 -- both born in Illinois. {p.854}
 In the 1870 census for Osage, Bates Co., Missouri, Philip Briggs is 34; 'Laura' is 30; Edwin is 13; Isaac is 11; Emily is 10; Arthur is 8; Wm. H. is 6; Walter is 4; and Elizabeth is 2.  [Possible error between wife Elizabeth and daughter Laura].  {p. 128}
 In the 1880 census for Osage, Bates Co., Missouri, Philip Briggs is a farmer, age 40, born Missouri (father Missouri).  His wife Elizabeth is 38, born Missouri (mother Kentucky).  Their children are Edwina, 21, born Illinois; Nuton, 19 IL farming; Emily 17 IL; Aurthur L. 15 IL; William 14 IL; J. Lillie 8, born Missouri; Cordelia 6 MO; M.  In the 1900 census for Nashville, Barton Co., Missouri, Philip Briggs is 64?, born Apr 1839? in Illinois (parents North Carolina?), married 44 years, farmer; wife Elizabeth M. is 61, born Dec 1838? in Kentucky (parents same), with 9 of 13 children living; sons are Phillip 21; and Clyde W. 19 -- both single, born Missouri, farm labor. {ed 24, sh 18b, p. 132}
