Facts and Events
Philip BARTON was born 22 dec 1804 (family bible) in Glasgow (submission to Latter Day Saints) and died 6 dec 1883. Scottish Archives have his will, which gives his normal residence as Burnbank Terrace, Glasgow; he died at (Old) Craigmore, Rothesay, Isle of Bute, the home of his niece, Mrs. Stuart McIntosh nee Bell. In 1851 Phillip Barton (b. 1809 Glasgow) lived at 10 Portland St., Gorbals, Glasgow, with mother Elizabeth Barton (b. Greenock 1781) and sister Elizabeth Bell (b. 1816) and family; in 1861 they lived at 4 Windsor Terrace, Glasgow, Phillip’s birth date being given as 1802 (census). In 1881 Stuart McIntosh (head, widow, b. 1843 Cathcart, Renfrewshire), children, the first 3 born in Glasgow, Geo. B. (1868), Grace A. H. (1870), Elizabeth B. (1875), James Stuart (b. 1878 Rothesay), mother Elizabeth Bell (widow, b. 1815 Glasgow), uncle Philip Barton (b. 1810 Glasgow) and 1 servant lived at Craigmore House, Rothesay, Isle of Bute (census). Philip lived a quiet life as a vague eccentric. He used to walk from Old Craigmore to Rothesay (3miles) to the Working Men’s Club to read the newspapers: this to save money though he had plenty. Towards the end of his life he was very deaf, but this did not deter him from going to Glasgow from time to time. When he did this he took his cat in a carpet bag. One night as he came home he was pounced on by 2 men who robbed him of his gold turnip watch. This disturbed him greatly; he did not go out again and died shortly after aged 76 (N. George).
