Information on Philemon Hawkins
- Philemon Hawkins moved to Bute County, NC in 1735 at age 18 where he soon became the wealthiest man in the county. He was a member of the Anglican Church and he was a member ot two Provincial Congresses that met in Halifax County in 1776. He was named a Lt. Col. of Cavalry in the Revolutionary War but soon resigned his commission to raise his own battalion. Philemon Hawkins also served 7 terms in the General Assembly and was a member of the Council of State.
