Will of Philemon Cavanaugh

Will of Philemon Cavanaugh of St. Mark's Parish and County of Orange, dated 19 April 1743.
Unto my loving wife Sarah Cavanaugh during her naturall life 400 acres of land, a moiety of 800 acres for which I have a pattant bearing date 30 June 1726, including so much of the plantation whereon I now live with houses, orchards, etc., as is within the bounds of the pattant. Also her choice of all my riding horses together with one young mair known by the name of Betty Fry's, one side saddle and bridle, and one fether bed and furniture.
Unto my son Charles Cavanaugh 1200 acres, vizt. 800 acres (whereof I have bequeathed unto my wife Sarah Cavanaugh during life 400 acres) and 400 acres adjoyning thereto taking part of the plantation whereon I now live. My said son hath full power by virtue hereof to grant unto his children a lease for their lives of the aforesaid land not exceeding three leases for life.
Unto my said son Charles Cavanaugh two Negro fellows George and Pollupus, also four cows and calves, four sows and piggs, a pair of pistols, my sword and guns, one horse of the value of 4 current money, one feather bed and furniture, three pewter dishes, six pewter plates and one iron pot.
Unto my daughter Winefred Yancy twenty shillings current money within two years after my decease.
Unto my daughter Eliza. Conner twenty shillings current money within two years.
Unto my daughter Jael Covington one Negro girle Jenny. Also twenty shillings current money.
Unto my daughter Ellinor one Negro girle Kate.
Unto my daughter Eliza, one Negro boy Simon.
Unto my daughters Ellinor, Eliza., Anna and Sarah Cavanaugh, to be equally divided among them, 1577 acres, part of a tract which I had of Henry Willis, Esqr., known by the name of Parker's land, 1600 acres part of the said Parker's land being now held by my sons in law Lewis Davis Yancy, John Conner and Thomas Covington by my deeds of gift, My daughters to chose their lots according to birth right.
Unto my daughters Ellinor, Elizabeth, Anna and Sarah and to my son Philemon Cavanaugh each a young mare, three sows and piggs, three cows and calves, one feather bed and furniture, three pewter dishes, six pewter plates, and one iron pott, to be paid at the day of marriage or arrivall to eighteen years of age.
Unto my loving son Philimon Cavanaugh 530 acres upon the branches of Muddy Run above Yancy's Mill. Also one half of another survey on Muddy Run branches above the said 530 acres joyning on the land aforesaid. Also 400 acres adjoyning the land of John Latham upon the river, known by the name of Yarbrough's.
Unto my loving children Philemon, Anna, Sarah and Mary one young Negro to oaoh which shall be born of my female slaves.
Unto my daughter Mary 600 acres under entry (survey not finished) on the branches of Mountain Run and Beverdam Run on the east side of a tract now held by Thos. Covington known by the name of Davis Cabbin and between the road and James Pendleton's land which I have agreed he shall have. Also three cows and calves, three sows and plggs, one feather bed and furniture, three dishes, six plates.
Unto my loving son Charles Cavanaugh all the land lying on the lower slue of Jno. Campbell's path on the north side of the road known by the name of Thornton's Road ... at the path where it comes into the road ... down the road to Alexr. McQueen's line ... to Tutt's line ... including the plantation known by the name of German's Cabbin.
I have several small children to have a maintenance and education out of my estate and some legacies to be paid. I desire my estate may remain together under the care and management of my loving wife Sarah Cavanaugh during her widowhood and that each of ray children Ellinor, Elizabeth, Anna, Philemon, Sarah and Mary may receive their full share in money as they shall arrive to lawfull age or day of marriage.
After my children have received their legacies, also my wife her part in case she marrys, all the residue unto my loving son Philemon Cavanaugh.
My loving wife Sarah Cavanaugh executrix and my son Charles Cavanaugh and my son in law Thomas Covington executors.
Whereas I have given ray loving daughters Ellinor, Eliza., Anna and Sarah 1577 acres, if either of my daughters have more than one son my desire is that the land be divided between the two surviving sons of either of my daughters.
