He was named Oswald Keith Norvell at birth but changed his name legally in 1928 to Phil. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII in the Philippines and during the Korean War in Trieste, Italy. He retired in 1954 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He worked as a lock operator for the New York State Canal System. They moved to Hannibal, NY in 1954.
