1865 March 1 - Peter Rusow was born on this date per Rusow Bible records. His death certificate says he was born in Buchanan Co., MO. This may or may not be correct. It is possible that his mother went to be with relatives when he was born or perhaps he thought all his life he was born in Buchanan Co., MO. I do not know where he was born. His parents lived in Jefferson Twp, Andrew Co., on the 1860 census. They are still there in 1870.

1870 census - Jefferson twp., Andrew Co., MO. Living with parents and siblings, Peter Rusow age 4.

At some time between 1873-1880, his parents moved to Benton Co., AR. However, before going to Arkansas, they may have lived briefly in Holt Co. and in Buchanan Co., MO.

1880 census - Dickson, Benton Co., AR. Peter Rusow age 14-15, living with his parents. I do not know how long he continued to live with his parents.

1885 - Peter would be 20 years old. He could be anywhere working.

1888 - married Daisy (perhaps Hayes is her middle name). According to the 1900 census, Peter and Daisy Rusow had been married 12 years.

1890 Sept - son William R. Rusow was born in MO per the 1900 census. I do not know where in MO. 1890 - age 24-25. My notes say at this time he lived in Vernon Co., MO. I have no idea where I got this information.

1891 - his father died. As of Jan 2005 I do not know where James Rusow died, but I suspect it was in Colorado.

1892 June - Peter and Daisy's son Andrew J. was born in Rock Co., MO, per his WWI Draft Card. Per the 1900 census, he was born in Colorado. Since they called this son after Peter's brother Andrew J. who lived in Douglas Co., Colorado, I am strongly thinking that he was born in perhaps Douglas Co., CO.

1894 June - Peter and Daisy's son Edward "Eddie" was born in Oregon per 1920 census. Oregon? Where in Oregon?

1899 July- his son Orville or Orvil was born in MO per 1900 census. Where in MO?

1910 census 9-Ward, St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO., pg 230B.

1910-1915 - Peter and his wife Daisy were divorced. __________________________________________________________________________ _____ c. 1914-1915 - Either in late 1914 or early 1915, Peter Rusow came out to see his brother Isaac in Lakeview, OR. Isaac was ill and dying. Peter probably stayed in Oregon.

1915 May 31 - Isaac Rusow died in Lakeview, OR.

1916 April 29 - Peter Rusow, 51, married his brother's widow Bertha, 38, in Lakeview, OR. Peter obtained a homestead of 160 acres about 8 milesout of Lakeview near Adel and moved Bertha and her children by Isaac to this unimproved homestead. They built a house, a pole barn, other outbuildings, and put in crops. During WWI they raised potatoes to sell. They lived here until 1923.

1920 census - look for them in Lake Co., OR.

1921 March 24 - Marlo Daniel Rusow born either on the homestead near Adel or perhaps in town in Lakeview. Bertha was 43 years old when Marlo was born. He was the only child that Peter and Bertha had together.

1923 - Pete Rusow gave up on the homestead near Adel. They went on a trip to Chico, California, to visit relatives. I think they went to visit Dave Rusow and his children who lived there. They they went to Oakland, Calif., to visit other relatives. I think these were Bertha's Walston relatives.

1923 June 25 - Pete and Bertha Rusow paid $1,000 for 6-3/4 acres from R. H. and Bessie Laffoon. Two 1/4 acres were in Sec 26 T4S R10W. 4.57 acres were the NE corner of Sec 27 T4sR10W. (See deed in files.)

late 1923 - Pete's step-daughters Mary and Nora attended school in Cloverdale. Nora was now 9 1/2 years old and it was the first time she ever went to school. The school was not far from their place; they walked to school. Nora was a quick learner and jumped from the first grade to higher grades. She attended this school from 1923-1930.

Between late 1923-1925 Pete Rusow and his step-son Jim built a large 2-story house and various outbuildings. See photos in my files. The house was still standing in 1983 when I visited Cloverdale. Their property and house were located on Mill Road (the road that led to Krebs Mill). For awhile, Pete Rusow and his step-son Jim Rusow worked at Krebs Mill. There was a small logging camp there with cabins. To make money, Bertha sold eggs and milk. She owned two cows (I have a photo of them). She milked her cows and put the milk in glass containers, six to a box. Then she and her daughter Nora walked up Mill Road to the logging camp carrying the milk and the eggs to sell to the families of the men who were logging and/or working at the small mill. They went there every day after Nora got out of school.

At some time between 1925--1927 after the house was completed, Pete's step-son Jim Rusow left home and went to work for the A.F. Coats Lumber Co. who operated a mill at the north edge of the city of Tillamook. Jim worked in the woods as a powder monkey. He set the dynamite to blow large logs loose when they got jammed. Jim met Gertrude Schweiger either in Tillamook or around Tillamook after he left home. Jim's sister Mary met Ernie Smith through Jim.

1926 January 10 - According to a letter sent to me by Ken Lane of Cloverdale (see files), Bertha Rusow and her daughters Mary Lydia Rusow and Nora Leona Rusow joined the Nestucca Presbyterian Church by confession on Jan 10, 1926.

About 1926-1927, Pete's brother Dave and Dave's son Charlie came for a short visit.

1928 - Peter's son Andrew, now 36, and wife Lillie came from Missouri to visit them in Cloverdale.

1928 September 1 - Pete Rusow's step- son Jim Rusow, 23, married Gertrude Schweiger in Tillamook.

1928 December - Pete Rusow's step- daughter Mary, 20, married Ernest Smith and left home. After Mary left home, the last two children in the Pete Rusow household were Pete's step-daughter Nora, 14, and Marlo, 7. Both attended the school in Cloverdale.

1929 May 14 - Nora Rusow, Bertha's daughter, received an Award of Honor-Excellence in Spelling, from School District 22, Tillamook Co. Public Schools. Award signed by James S,. Gain, School Supt.

1929 July 20 - Peter and Bertha's only child, son Marlo Daniel Rusow, 8, died in Tillamook, Tillamook Co., OR, of gangrene and blood poisoning. He had been running on the "corduroy" part of the road to the mill and got a sliver in his foot. The wound festered and became badly infected, which led to blood poisoning and then gangrene. According to my mother, Pete would not take Marlo to a doctor. The boy was in terrific pain. Finally, Bertha loaded him into a wagon and took him by herself to Tillamook to a doctor. It was too late. Marlo was buried at the IOOF Cemetery at Hebo, 2 1/2 miles from Cloverdale. There was no stone. After Marlo's death, Peter and Bertha's marriage fell apart. She blaimed Peter for Marlo's death.

1930 March 29 - Pete and Bertha Rusow sold the property, the house, the outbuildings and all their improvements PLUS an additional 2.5 acres for $1,000. to John Wilson. (They lost money.) I do not know when or how they acquired the additional 2.5 acres piece. This parcel is adjacent to the road that is called in the deed "Cloverdale Lumber Company mill road".

1930 census - Cloverdale twp., Tillamook Co., OR Rusaw, Peter 65 b. MO Bertha 49 Nora 16 born OR

c.mid- late 1930 Bertha left Peter Rusow. She obtained a job as a cook and housekeeper for the Spaulding ranch near Dayton, OR. She left Cloverdale and took her daughter Nora, now 16, with her to the Spaulding ranch. Nora attended 9th grade at Dayton High School in the spring of 1931. That's was the last schooling Nora had.

1931 Sept - Nora Rusow, 17, married Harley Greenslit, 19, in McMinnville, OR. After they married, the couple went to live with his parents in Carlton, OR. Bertha became ill after September. She left the Spaulding ranch and went to Portland where she went into the hospital.

1932 Jan 20 - Bertha's daughter Nora had a baby girl. It was delivered by Nora's mother-in-law Anna Greenslit in the house where all were still living together. When the baby was about a month old, Nora and the baby were taken to the hospital in Portland so Bertha could see her new grandaughter.

In early March 1932, Bertha was transferred to the Oregon State Hospital at Salem.

1932 March 23 - On her daughter Nora's 18th birthday, Bertha Irene Walston Rusow died at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, OR. Nora did not know that her mother had been transferred from Portland to Salem. Her mother was dead over a month before Nora was contacted and told that she had died. There was no funeral. My mother did not know who made the arrangements to have her mother's ashes interred at the little cemetery at Hebo. My mother never knew where her mother was buried. She thought it might be at the hospital in Salem. She never knew what happened to her mother's personal property. It was just "gone". She never knew what happened to Pete Rusow after she and her mother left Cloverdale. She did not know where he lived, and she did not know when or where he died. He was just "gone". He never contacted her.

I do not know where Peter Rusow lived between 1930 and his death in Lebanon, Linn Co., OR, in 1947.

                                                                                                                                                      • **********************************

My NOTES on Peter Rusow as of January 15, 2005. Helen Graves 4074 Hwy 147 Lake Almanor, CA 96137 hgraves@@PSLN.com[Walston GEDCOM.FTW]

1900 census- 9-Ward, St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO Rusow, Peter married 12 years. Born in MO. Both parents born in MO. Daisy wife age 27 born May 1873, married 12 years.
