ORANGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA - MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS
The following is taken from a book intitled Chancery Suits of Orange County, Virginia 1831-1845, a collection of suits found in loose papers
The following is taken from Pamunkey Neighbors of Orange County Virgnia. In the settlement of the Estate of Peter Mountague in 1759, who was murdered in Orange County in l745, there are entries for the years 1757, 1758 & 1759 to the following effect: "To 500 pins." Due to the shortage of coins in the early days of the Colony, pins were often substituted for coins to be sue as small change. The "pins" mentioned in this return probably were Elizabeth Mountague"s "pin money" or allowance for the year.
