Peter Martin- Died at his Home on Morris Avenue Saturday of Heart Failure
Peter Martin, aged 72 died at his home on Morris Avenue, Saturday forenoon, of heart trouble and a general breaking down of his physical system. He had been in poor health for several months, but had been seriously ill only for the past few weeks, during which time he suffered from a stroke of apoloxy.
The funeral services were held the Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, conducted by his pastor Rev. Slotz. The interment was made in the new cemetery.
Mr. Martin was born in Blommbury, N.J. and came to Ohio with his parents in 1851. Excepting 5 years he lived in Henry County, IL, he spent the remainder of his life in Athens County. He purchased the Leondias Jewett farm on The Plains, and remained there until the fall of 1902, the he sold his property to the Johnson Coal Company and came to Athens. He owned several resident properties on Morris Avenue where he lived at the time of his death.
Mr. Martin was twice married, his first wife, being Mary Ann Hoppock of New Jersey. There were four children born to them, Isabel, wife of J. Gaston Coe, John H, Walter H, William H, who was drowned in Hocking Canal, age 9, and Geo. W., who died in infancy.
April 3, 1965, Mr. Martin married Cheretta H. Schaffer, who survived him. By this second union, two children were born Curtis J., who operated a dairy east of town and Peter Leslie who lives at home.
