    He served with brother Robert Isaac Kurtz in Company A of the Fifth Regiment of Virginia Infantry of the Stonewall Brigade. He joined on 5 June 1861 at Winchester. On 29 April 1862 he was promoted from private to sergeant. He was admitted to a hospital on 15 September 1862 with an undisclosed illness. By the end of October 1863 he had returned and was transferred to the Quartermaster Department. Peter was captured at Fisher's Hill on 22 September 1864 and held prisoner at Fort McHenry, Maryland, then transferred to Point Lookout in February of 1865. He must have been released just in time to surrender with Lee at Appomattox. He was paroled there with the rest on 9 April 1865.
