Facts and Events
27th February 1895: "P.J. Delaney, Dunmore MacHales, was elected President of the County Galway G.A.A. On his way home from the meeting in Tuam, he was drenched in the heavy rain and sleet. He caught a severe cold. After a few days, his cold turned to pneumonia. 9th March 1895: "P.J. Delaney, President of Galway G.A.A., died at the age of 35. His tenure as President was the shortest on record. Delaney's death deprived Dunmore of a great Nationalist figure and an ardent G.A.A. man. 16th March 1895: "His death is deeply lamented not alone among the inhabitants of Dunmore but throughout this and neighboring counties, where his principles as a sterling nationalist, an undeviating friend of Ireland had brought him in touch with the people." "On Monday his remains were laid in their resting place, and seldom in the province was there seen a larger and more imposing funeral." "Immediately after the funeral a meeting of the representatives from the several counties was held for the purpose of inaugurating a fund to provide a suitable memorial to the memory of their dead comrade." "Subscriptions amounting to over £30 were handed in." Source: "Dunmore: A History" by Hubert Birmingham
