Notes from Hardesty's History of Calhoun County: "Perry Commodore Campbell, born in Rockbridge County, Virginia in 1830, was a defender of the principles of the Southern Confederacy during the conflict between the States, serving three years in the ranks of the Confederate army, and suffering five weeks imprisonment at Camp Chase, Ohio. . . In 1871, with his little family, Mr. Campbell settled in Calhoun County, and in 1882 he was joined by his father, John A. Campbell, and Sarah (Messenger) Campbell, his step-mother. . . Perry C. Campbell is actively and prosperously engaged in business as ferryman and hotel keeper at Grantsville."
