After the death of his parents, Percival was taken in and raised by his mother's brother, Tom Whitehead and his family in Mt Gambier, South Australia.

Percival owned a bakery in Adelaide but when his health began to fail, he sold the business and went to live in Busselton, Western Australia, where he took up farming.
