Peachy B. Malone

Peachy Brooks Malone and Sarah McInish had 8 children, 7 daughters and 1 son.
According to the Federal census of 1840, Peachy and Sarah Margaret were living in Campbell County, Georgia. They had one child at that time, Luticia.
The Chattahoochee River meandered through the middle of Campbell County from the northeast to southwest. Campbell County was divided sometime after 1860. It became Douglas County north of the Chattahoochee and Fulton County south of the river. Douglasville is the present county seat of Douglas County and Atlanta is the county seat of Fulton County.
Sometime between 1846, the Malone family moved to Cherokee County, Alabama, about 70 miles distant. They settled in the vicinity of the Coosa and Chattooga Rivers. It is noted as the 27 District on the 1850 Census. They had been blessed with the arrival of four more daughters, Mary, Caroline, Missouri and Sarah. The spring of 1852 must have been a happy one for Peachy and Sarah, for that was when their only son, Robert Henry was born.
The oldest daughter married Jessie Woodard. The Woodards were neighbors in Cherokee County, Alabama. Most of the Woodards stayed in Alabama when the Malone’s journeyed on to Texas.
On December 24, in 1857, another daughter, Juda, was born. The Malone family and relatives and the John McGinnis family, started on their journey to Texas most likely in the year 1860. They embarked on a steamship at Mobile Alabama, sailed down Mobile Bay into the Gulf of Mexico, then to Louisiana and up the Mississippi River to the Red River and on to Shreveport Louisiana. From there they navigated to the Red River and Big Cypress River to the river-port of Jefferson, Texas.
Peachy paid poll tax, a prerequisite to voting, in 1861 and 1862 in Harrison County, Texas. As tax rolls are increased one year after arrival of a citizen in the county, we can assume that Peachy and family came to Harrison County in 1860 and left in 1862.
Jesse Woodard and James Woodard had paid their poll tax in Upshur County in 1859. In 1860, Jesse is listed as owning 117 acres in J J Johnson Survey with a value of $125.00. It is thought that Jesse and Catherine Woodard were the first of our Malone family to immigrate to Texas about 1858, as their second child, William Hardy Woodard, was born in Texas on December 2, 1859.
Peachy and Sarah’s last child, a daughter was born on December 28 1861, near Marshall Texas. Their second daughter Mary Jane, had married John Forkwood Buchan a few months earlier on September 25, 1861.

Peachy is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Cisco, Texas.
