Named in father's will
Records support that this Paul Tew was born about 1715-7, died in 1784, and married 1) Patience Lillibridge and 2) widow Mary Child. The fact that Maj. Henry Tew's will mentioned son Paul and the fact that Paul's will named a sister Elnathan Tew further support the conclusion that Henry Tew had two sons named Paul (one dying young). However, it is bothersome that the RI vital records say his parents were Henry and Dorcas Tew.
1 Dec 1800 — "Newport Tew, a black man, on his examination stated that he was born at Warwick, a slave belonging to Stephen Low of Warwick, with whom he lived until he was twelve years old. At that time, Low sold him to Edward Smith of North Providence, with whom he lived ten years. Smith sold him to Paul Tew, Esq., of Providence, who freed him by the terms of his will. He was in his seventy-fifth year." [S4]
