A Midkiff man was killed on lower Mud River when he was crushed by a falling tree.December 22nd 2004. About 3 p.m. Emergency crews were called to the scene, which was across the river from the Porterville Church where the tree had fallen. A four wheel drive vechile belonging to the Hamlin Volunteer Fire Department was used to transport the police and medical team to the scene, according to Joe Vinson, chief of the Hamlin VFD. Paul Howard Smith 57, was dead when the crew arrived on the scene. Paul Howard Smith and his brother Colvin were cutting down trees when the accident happened.
