Paul E. Cunningham, 94, of Ambler, Pa., formerly of Salisbury, Md., died peacefully on Friday, June 7, 2013, at Artman Lutheran Home in Ambler, Pa. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 21, at Wicomico Memorial Park, 721 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, Md.
Born in Sterling on April 3, 1919, he was a son of the late Jack and Ina Cunningham. Paul was a 1941 graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia. At the university, he took part in the Reserve Officer Training program and received a commission as a second lieutenant in the Field Artillery reserve. He was ordered to active duty on July 1, 1941. After various assignments he was ordered to the 75th Infantry Division which went to the European Theater and saw combat in the Battle of the Bulge, Colmar Pocket under the French 1st Army, the Rhine River Crossing, Ruhr Valley Campaign and eventually did Army of Occupation duty. He was promoted to the rank of Captain and ran a staging area that processed troops reassigned to the fighting against Japan. He was later ordered to duty in Paris where he met and married Solange Whiteley, who predeceased him in 1984.
Together with his wife, he owned and published weekly newspapers in Elba, Ala. (The Elba Clipper) and Pocomoke City, Md. (The Worcester Democrat). Paul also owned and farmed land in New Church, Va., and completed a degree in agricultural studies at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He later returned to the newspaper business as farm editor at the Daily Times in Salisbury from which he retired in 1984.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed tending to his farm and woodlands in New Church for which he received a Virginia State Outstanding Tree Farmer award. He also maintained a busy schedule travelling and freelance writing for various agricultural trade journals. In 2002 he moved to Ambler, Pa., to be closer to his son and daughter-in-law. He was an active member of several organizations including The Rotary Club and Elks Club of Salisbury, Dunes Club of Ocean City, American Legion, 75th Infantry Division Veterans Association and Delta Tau Delta at the University of Missouri.
Besides his son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Ronni Cunningham, he is survived by two nieces and a nephew.
Two brothers predeceased him.
