'Sir Patrick Vaus, Lord Barnbarroch, ... held the office of Lord of Session [Scotland] in 1575 ... [and] was invested as a Knight in 1583. He held the office of Scottish Ambassador to Denmark in 1587, to arrange the marriage of King James VI. He held the office of Lord of Council in 1587. In 1589 he accompanied King James VI to Norway. In 1591 he had Barnbarroch erected into a free Barony.'[1]


JAMES I (1566-1625). King of England. Letter Signed ('James R', as James VI of Scotland) to the Laird of Barnbarroche, ½-page folio with address on the reverse, Stirling, 27 September 1585. Addressed to the Laird [Sir Patrick Vans] as 'ane of the senator of o[ur] college of justice'.

An order to Vans to be present at the next meeting of the 'checkker' [exchequer] arranged for 6 October.

'... At that tyme we think maist expedient that it convene agane at Stairling and proceed that all thing be perfect that ye could not on[d]ertake the Last tyme ...'
