Officer Patrick Joseph Keane
Facts and Events
About Patrick Keane
- Patrick J. Keane was born in March 1850* in County Tipperary, Ireland. Indications are that he originated from County Tipperary and emigrated to America in 1866 [Source 1900 Census]. He first migrated to Saginaw, Michigan, where he was listed [as "Patrick Cann"] in the 1870 Census at age 20, working as a "Rafter", which was an occupation where logs were tied together and drifted or were pulled across bodies of water to the mills. According to his obituary, Patrick was also engaged in mining during the time he was living in Saginaw, Michigan.
- Patrick married in 1872 [Source: 1900 Census, although his obituary claims it was in 1869] to Elizabeth Gent, likely in Saginaw, Michigan. Elizabeth [known as "Bessie"} was also born in Ireland in January 1855, and her family emigrated to America in 1870 [Source: 1900 Census]. They had 10 children together [Source: 1900 Census], but only seven of them have been identified through census and other records.
- By about 1873, Patrick and his family had re-located to Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Patrick is listed in the 1880 Census as age 35 [likely a reporting error], occupation Laborer, born in Ireland with wife Eliza (age 28, occupation "Keeping House"], daughter Mary [age 8], daughter Kate [age 6], son Micheal [age 5] son James [age 3] and son Frank [age 1]. [Note: Patrick's daughter Mary is erroneously listed as being born in Ireland, and all of the other children are listed as being born in Pennsylvania, even through their first daughter Mary was were surely born in Michigan].
- Patrick Keane found work with Patterson & Emery as a teamster [driving a horse-drawn wagon to transport goods] and later worked in the hotel business and found pipeline work before securing an appointment as a patrolman on the Oil City Police Department in abt. 1890. Mr. Keane spent some 15 years as a Patrolman, and at the end of his tenure was the eldest member of the Police Department, but became one of its most beloved and respected officers, known for his tough, yet compassionate demeanor by Oil City's citizens.
- On Friday, February 17, 1905, Mr. Keane collapsed in the lobby of a local business while walking his beat, was taken to the hospital, where he died a week later of apoplexy on February 24th.
- - Patrick Keane's obituary claims that he was 59 years old when he died making him born abt. 1846, but the 1900 Census lists his birthdate as "March 1850", and his grave monument says "1850-1905".

He resided there for several years, then moved to Marquette, MI where he met and married Elizabeth Gent in 1872.
