Facts and Events
not know one seems to know.
of the earliest settlers here was Patrick Fitzgerald, established his home 1 mile north of Weller, then know as Smithfield and under his roof many new-comers stayed until they became situated. By early seventies the following families had settled here: Pat Fitzgerald, Mike Fitzgerald." (Viewed by Joann Jackson, great-grandaughter of Mike Fitzgerald and Hannah Barron Fitzgerald)
and Catherine Quinlan) Patrick and Catherine met on a blind date while living in New York City. She was working as a maid, he in a stable. Patrick died as a result of getting sick after being caught in a storm. Martina states that she has a hearing loss which seems to be common in the Fitzgerald families and Fitzgeralds are know to have "pretty" skin. Patrick has made his "mark" on several legal documents in Monroe Co. According to Martina Daker neither Patrick or Catherine could read or write, part of their punishment by the British for being Catholic. According to the World Book Encyclopedias the Irish Catholic under British rule of that time frame 1840-1870, (if they maintained their Catholic Religion) were not allowed schooling, not allowed to hold public office, not allowed to purchase or own land.
Fitzgerald are on file in Monroe Co. Photocopies in possession of Sharon Pohlman.
