Patrick is still shown in the 1856 Census for Mitchell County Iowa living with his 21-year-old wife Ellen and 1 year-old son James. OR, could the Pat. listed actually be baby William P. (Patrick?) and the name was transcribed mistakenly? I should try to see the original.

OK--Ancestry.com has the original and it still doesn’t help. It shows that Ellen is widowed and has 1 year old Jas (James) and Pat, who ha a small dot under the sex column, and that he was born in Ireland, but nothing else. Perhaps she was so distraught that the she wasn’t able to communicate clearly to the census taker? I don’t know what the census date was for this 1856 census was. Some questions may never be answered.....

The Daileys are living next door to Irish-born Daniel (age 36) and Ellen (age 32) Lane and their 12 year old daughter Jane (also born in Ireland).

In 1860, Daniel and Ellen Lane are listed as farmers and their 17 year old daughter Jane is a teacher boarding with the Kilcher family and their six children on their farm.
