According to family lore, Paolo was blind and therefore prevented from immigrating. He died shortly before his daughter Lucy turned 13. Her siblings immigrated ahead of her and she left after her father's death. However, the manifest of the Sophia Honenberg/SS Sannio sailing from Palermo shows that Paolo, age 57, Antonina, 14, and Antonio, 12, traveled together and that Paolo paid their way.
