Meyersdale Republic, August 16, 1956 OWEN MURRAY DEATH SUMMONS MEYERSDALE OLDEST CITIZEN, OWEN MURRAY

   The long life of Owen Murray, 99, Meyersdale's oldest male resident, quietly came to an end Friday in Meyersdale Community Hospital, to which place Mr. Murray had been taken as a patient a short time before. Well known in the Meyersdale community, Mr. Murray had a host of friends.  He was born on October 6, 1856, and had he lived until October 6, he would have been 100 years of age. Born In Greenville Mr. Murray was a son of James Murray, who moved from Addison township to Greenville township before 1850.  In Greenville township, James was married to Lydia Beal and Mr. Murray was one of the children born to this union. Mr. Murray was married three times and his wives all preceded him in death.  His first wife, Mary Ann Saylor, bore him four sons and two daughters: his second wife, Hattie Carter, three sons and four daughters and his third wife. Mrs. Harriet (Lint) Slagle, a widow, raised the younger children from the second marriage. His first wife died in 1892, his second in 1906 and his third in 1931.  For years, Mr. Murray made his home with a daughter, Mrs.  Nannie Hare, Lincoln avenue, Meyersdale.  

Retired in 1932 Mr. Murray was a farmer most of his life, retiring from that occupation in 1932. During his lifetime, he was also a logger, wagon master and undertaker during the more serious epidemics which plagued this area before 1900. He was a member of Hostetler Church of the Brethren, where he served as deacon, trustee and treasurer. He also was a former township road supervisor. Until almost the very end, Mr. Murray's mind remained keen and his eyesight good. He suffered from a hard-of-hearing affliction.
