Orland H. Hasselbach July 13, 1918 -- Sept. 16, 2004 ------ Orland H. Hasselbach, 86, of Fremont died Thursday morning at the OH Veter ans Home in Sandusky. Orland was born in Kingsway, the son of Clarence H. and Ora (Artz) Hasselb ach. On July 7, 1945, he married Beryl G. Davlin and she survives. A 1936 graduate of Ross High School, he was on the first Ross swimming te am and competed in the state diving tournament. He attended Case Institu te of Technology in Cleveland. Always interested in the food industry, he owned and operated Hasselbach 's Market on OH Avenue before he became vice president of the Fremont Kra ut Company. Orland was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. His other memberships includ ed the Fremont Country Club, Fraternal Order of Elks, DAV, VFW Post 294 7, and the American Legion. He was a former member of Rotary Club. As a first lieutenant during World War II, he served as a bombardier, flyi ng in a B-24 with the 383rd Bomb Squadron, 8th AF, and completed 22 missio ns before being shot down over Ger. Orland was wounded and confined to a German hospital at Wetzler until impr isoned at Stalag Luft 3 in Sagan and later moved to Stalag Luft 17 in Moos eberg, Ger. Gen. George Patton's Army released him in May of 1945. Lt. Hasselbach rece ived the Air Medal with three oakleaf clusters, the European Theatre of Op erations Medal, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, t he European/African/Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Purple Heart. Orland is survived by his wife, Beryl; son, Kurt (Barbara) Hasselbach of S pringfield; daughter, Kristine H. (Myron) Macechko of Fayetteville, Ark .; and grandchildren, Matthew, Mark, and Michael Macechko, Heather (Hassel bach) McDowell, and Gretchen Hasselbach. A brother, Merlin C. Hasselbac h, preceded him. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Keller-Ochs-Koch Funer al Home, 416 S. Arch St. Elks Lodge service: 6 p.m. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, 705 W. State St. M r. Hasselbach will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Pastor Pa ul Gruetter is officiating. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery with military graveside services by the VFW and A merican Legion.
