There seems to be some confusion as to whether this person's name is Orin Otis or Otis Orin and also whether he was born in Vermont or New York.

Some discrepancy on O.O.'s name: Orin Otis or Otis Orin or Orin Owen. Most likely Orin O. His family roots are said to come from the the New England area: Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts. It is said that his family was pre-Revolutionary. He married Minerva Granger, from Massachusetts, where they lived for awhile near Boston (North Adams) . The 1850 Massachusetts Census lists several children. Two of which were George and Ervin (Irvin). They also lived in Vermont awhile, one daughter born there.

Then moved to Kansas around 1857. The family story has him involved in the early territorial government of Kansas. Orin made and lost money....One fortune went toward moving Kansas to become a state, the other when he signed for a loan for a friend and when the friend defaulted on the loan, O.O. had to pay it back. Aunt Nina says that he died a relatively poor man. Cousin Maryn Bridges (from Kansas) says that they he built and they lived in a nice brick home outside of Beloit.

1880 Census from Turkey Township list his occupation as a farmer. His farm is on the 1884 township map. Orin was found in several different counties in Kansas: Mitchell, Dickinson, and Jefferson. In the 1880 Kansas Census, he listed his occupation as "farmer".

After Minerva died, he had several more children with second wife Clarissa--names unknown. Obituary in Beloit Gazette April 29, 1909 said he was one of Mitchell County s "oldest settlers" He was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery in Beloit.

Located on 1860 Kansas Territory census for Dickinson Co. with first five children.

Located on 1870 Davis Co., Davis Township census with wife and children Mary (19), Edwin (17), Adelaide (10) and Sarah (8). Son George (29) appears to live next door with wife Margaret (29), and his children William (6), Cora (3), and Albert (1 month).
