Nederlands Hervormd/Dutch Reformed |
In 1844 Pier Plantinga bought a house, shed and a small piece of land in Abbegaasterketting for fl 725,-- , where he started a Coopery. Abbegaasterketting is just a few houses near Abbega, a place where a small ferry crossed the water.(Ketting is a chain, over the water to pull the Ferry across). Pier must have been rather successful because when the family sold the place in 1876, they earned fl 3.700 (abt € 38.000 nowadays). Six children were born, one who died in infancy. Oepke was the second son, born in 1846. In the Civil Registration (Bevolkingsregister) we see that Oepke was a farmhand.
The church: His father, Pier Plantinga, was Nederlands Hervormd (Dutch reformed) when he married in 1844, so it appears that he wasn't with the Secession of 1834 from which Hendrik de Cock and Albertus van Raalte were a few known leaders. The Plantinga family must have gone to the Gertrudiskerk in Abbega which was a Nederlands Hervormde Kerk in those days just about 2 miles from their house.
In 1881 Bevolkingsregister Oepke already left the Dutch Reformed Church and might have joined the Christian Reformed Church.
In 1886, a second schism appeared, named the Doleantie, of Rev. Abraham Kuyper and from what I found so far is that especially in the region of Abbega, Folsgare and Oosthem many people turned away from the Dutch Reformed Church and joined new Churches or the Christian Reformed Church. The reverends were not ministers in one place, they traveled from town to town, so it is most likely that Oepke who left also (Bevolkingsregister) went to church in a house or barn in Oosthem about 6 miles from where the family lived . Namely, in 1892 when the different Reformed Churches merged into the Reformed Church a new church was built there.
