    HIGGS, Norma - February 13, 1929 - September 26, 2003 - Norma Higgs died September 26, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by parents Stanley and Muriam (sic) Higgs and survived by her brother Bill Graham Doris. The devotion and commitment of her friends over this long illness is a tribute t her character. After attending North Bay Normal School, she received a degree in History and Psychology at Queen's in 1955, Norma furthered her education with a degree in Physical Education at McMaster and concluded her formal studies in 1968 with a M.A. in Guidance and Physical Education from the University of Alberta. A devoted educator, the teaching career of Miss Higgs spanned from 1948 until 1985. In addition to her dedication in the classroom, she devoted countless hours to the development of young athletes which was rewarded with numerous regional and provincial championships for the teams she coached. At Chippewa Secondary School as a teacher of Physical Education, Mathematics, Data Processing and English, she became a legend for the commanding presence in the classroom coupled with her sensitivity to individual student needs. A natural athlete, Norma excelled in volleyball, swimming, archery, basketball, softball and track and field. She received awards at the high school and university level, going on to represent Canada at the British Empire Games. Norma's achievements as an athlete and coach were recognized with her induction into the North Bay Sports Hall of the Fame. A tribute to Norma is scheduled for November 13th, 2003.
