Norma Virginia Howard August 11, 2015 9:12 pm (1) Signatures SOUTH GLENS FALLS | Norma Virginia Howard, 84, of South Glens Falls, left the loving arms of her family to enter the loving arms of our Lord and to be reunited with her husband of 58 years, John Vernon Howard, on Monday, Aug. 10, 2015.
Hers was a good and blessed life. The happiness and joy she brought to all of us will live on in our memories. Her faith was always her guide.
Born March 26, 1931, in Kenton, Ohio, she was the daughter of Reid and Maude Ford.
She is survived by her sister, Muriel Ford of Ava, Missouri, and was predeceased by a sister and brother, Marjorie Zeigler and Harold Ford. Her extended family in Ohio consisted of many nieces and nephews who always brought her much joy.
A selfless servant of God, she worked for more than 40 years as a registered nurse, where she enjoyed many nursing memories involving the care of the sick and frail. After graduating from Lima Memorial School of Nursing in Ohio, she set off on a journey to begin her career in upstate New York. It was there that a dashing Air Force serviceman, John Vernon Howard, suffered injuries sustained in a car accident while home on leave and was admitted to the same hospital she had just started working at. Their love story began.
Norma and John raised five children together. They were so proud of each of them, and all of them had a special place in their hearts.
She is survived by Kileen J. Howard and John Spurling, Steven M. Howard and Angie Howard, David W. Howard and Judy Cook, Thomas J. Howard and his predeceased wife, Kim Beth Howard, Patricia A. Shuck and Loren J. Shuck.
Her crown jewels continued to shine bright as she watched more and more grandchildren arrive to be rocked in her arms and share so many firsts with her. She is survived by Michael and Meghan Howard, Kristina and John Swift, Joshua and Tonya Victor, Jeremiah Victor, Nathan and Andrea Victor, John V. Howard (her husband’s namesake) and Natalie Howard, Brandon and Danielle Kay, Scott Kay, Kerry Kay, Trevor Smith, Caleb Shuck, Micheal Woodes and Ashleigh Dillon. Norma was very close to all of her grandchildren and felt blessed to share a special bond with her grandson Justin Howard, who lived with her.
Just when the rocking chair was getting dusty, along came the best thing to get Mom smiling, great-grandchildren. Hugs and memories to Angela Howard and Seth Weinberger, Macen Howard, Lucy Howard, Elliana Victor, Mathew Victor, Jack Victor, Erin Coffin, Ethan Kay, James Dillon, Lillyana, Jeremiah Cook, Autumn Cook and Ryan Cook, who shares the same birthday as her.
Mom loved her family, her garden, reading, cooking, her pets and her wonderful rescue kitty, Blackie. She enjoyed many relaxing trips up to camp with our Dad. She was always a sweet and kind lady to all.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff of The Community Hospice and her close-knit friends at the South Glens Falls Methodist Church, and offer sincere, heartfelt appreciation to Mom’s caregiver, Virginia Mosher, who was a valued and caring part of mom’s later years in life.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to: The Community Hospice, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144; or The United Methodist Church of South Glens Falls, 15 Maplewood Parkway, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.
A celebration of her life will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at the United Methodist Church of South Glens Falls on Maplewood Parkway.
Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 15, at Harland Funeral Home on Main Street in Port Henry, with a graveside service officiated by Pastor Kelly Warner to immediately follow at Union Cemetery of Moriah.

She inspired me to be more than I could ever imagine. She taught me valuable lessons about humility and patience. Her smile and laugh could cut the mood in the worst of situations, and her hug and gentle voice always made the most difficult situation seam like nothing but a blip on the radar. When I lost my grandpa it was like losing my best friend...now losing my gramma it feels multiplied. The great thing is she is again with her best friend...my grandpa and I know together they are unstoppable guardian angels for all of us left behind. We will see you again soon gramma...I love and miss you and grandpa terribly.
