Noah Heiny, who has been in failing health for some time past, died suddenly on last Thursday while sitting in a rocking chair. He was the son of Abraham and Rebecca Heiny, and was born in Wayne county, in the vicinity where he has always lived, on October 31, 1831, aged 72 years, 11 months and 20 days. In the year 1859 he was united in marriage to Susan Berg. To them were born two daughters, Adeline Elmira and Emma Rebecca. They went to housekeeping on the farm in Jefferson township, where George Lannard [sic] now lives, and in the winter of that year he taught his first school, where the Elkenberry school is now located. In the spring of 1858 they moved to the farm where he died. The next two winters he taught in a log school house that stood about 40 rods east of the present Kimes' school house, and the following winter he taught in the brick school house that once stood in the yard where the present Kimes school now stands. During these four years he was elected Justice of the Peace for one term. He was a farmer and was acquainted with blacksmithing, and kept a shop on the farm for a number of years, he having learned the trade with his father. In 1862 Mr. Heiny espoused the cause of Christ and united with the U.B. church, and for 42 years he was true to the Master. Surely we can say of him that he was faithful unto death. He was a good man, and one of sterling worth ; strictly honest, generous, and loving the truth he was unswerving in his loyalty to the truth. He was possessed of a fine disposition and his sensibilities being keen, the suffering and distress of others strongly appealed to him. Those of the immediate family who remain to mourn his departure are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Henry Bertsch, Miss Emma, one sister, Mrs. Jacob Lennard, of this vicinity, and one brother, Solomon Heiny, of Sullivan, Ind. The wife has lost a loving husband and faithful companion ; the children, a kind and considerate father, and the community at large a good neighbor and a noble citizen. Funeral services were held at Locust Grove church, Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Geo. Floyd, of Dublin, using Luke 1:78-79, assisted by Elder S.W. Teeter, of Hagerstown. The remains were consigned to the earth in the cemetery near by.
