Nicholas Schmehl enlisted as a private on January 25, 1776 in the Second Pennsylvania Battalion commanded by Colonel Arthur St. Clair. He served with Captain Rudolph Bunner's Company during 1776 and then with Captain Smith's Company from 1777 until 1780.
Following the Revolutionary War, Mr. Schmehl returned to Berks County where he married his first wife, Elizabeth.
After the death of his first wife, he and his son Benjamin came to Bradford Township. They built a farm in the wilderness of what is now the Troy Hill area.
According to Hardman Phillip's journal, the Schmehl property was located one and one-half miles north of Philipsburg along an Indian path.
Schmehl later married his second wife Catherine Cline. They were the parents of eight children.
The family later moved to Potter Township and resided there from 1814 until 1824, after his wife's death, he returned to Clearfied County and lived with a son. Mr. Schmehl died in 1827.
