Facts and Events
Nicholas Roy’s origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 1st November 1713, when he married Elizabeth Ewen at Pagham on the Sussex coast. They went on to have five children – four girls and a boy - baptised at Pagham between 1714 and 1725, and also had another daughter for whom no baptism has been found. Two of Nicholas and Elizabeth’s daughters died in 1720. Their daughter Mary died aged four in May that year, then their daughter Frances died aged two in the September. Elizabeth died in 1728. Nicholas’s daughter Jane died in 1731, having outlived her mother by three years. It is not clear whether Nicholas remarried. There was a Nicholas Roy who married a Mary Hampton at Pagham in 1734, but it is not certain whether this is the same man. Nicholas died in 1743, being buried at Pagham on 1st May 1743. References
