Elizabeth Ewen’s origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on 1st November 1713, when she married Nicholas Roy at Pagham on the Sussex coast. They went on to have five children – four girls and a boy - baptised at Pagham between 1714 and 1725, and also had another daughter for whom no baptism has been found. Two of Elizabeth and Nicholas’s daughters died in 1720. Their daughter Mary died aged four in May that year, then their daughter Frances died aged two in the September. Elizabeth died in 1728, being buried at Pagham on 22nd November 1728. Nicholas survived her by fourteen years. References
