The 1787 Personal Property Tax Lists shows
a Nicholas Johnson with 1 black tithe in Hanover County and
a Nicholas Johnson in King William County with 21 black tithes.

The King William County Nicholas was also listed as responsible for the tithable payments of John Brightwell.

There was also a Nicholas Johnson listed in Louisa County as "Not Tithables"! This might indicate that he lived in some other county. An individual could only be required to pay personal property taxes on property in the same county where he lived. Property in other counties was exempt.
