    After leaving college he [John Boyle Gordon] entered upon the study of the law with Colonel Carpenter, and was admitted to the bar of Kentucky in 1824. In the following year, he married Miss Sophia Hawkins. she came from good Revolutionary stock. Her father, Nicholas Hawkins, a native of Virginia, served in the army under Washington, and was at the Battle of Yorktown, and witnessed the surrender of Cornwallis. He died in 1816. Mrs. Gordon is still living, at the venerable age of seventy-three.
