Pioneer Fredonia 1835

Nicolas Cigrand was born in Luxemburg, Germany. He learned the blacksmith trade, and emigrated to America in 1852. He first went to Ohio, where he stayed for two years. He then came to Waubeka, WI, and for a few weeks, stayed in Newburg. In the fall of 1854, he returned to Ohio, but only stayed a short time before returning to Waubeka, this time to stay. He purchased property in Waubeka, and followed his trade until 1859, when he built the Eagle Hotel. He ran this hotel for one year. He then rented the property for a year while he again worked in the field of his trade. After renting it out for a year, he sold it to his brother, Jacob, and continued with his blacksmith work.

He was a Democrat, and held the office of Justice of the Peace for sixteen years. He also held other local offices such as Notary Public.

In 1855, he married Susanna Smith. Their children are Mary (Herman) Dorman, Anna, Peter, Elizabeth, Katie, and Bernard.
