Nicholas Card was the son of Gualter (Walter) Card and his wife Margaret. Nicholas was baptised 30 April 1668 in East Grinstead, Sussex. Some people have transcribed the baptism record as giving his mother's name as "Mary Margaret", however having looked at the original record it's more likely that the "Mary" is part of the date for the next entry i.e. "May". The marriage record for Nicholas' parents is also difficult to read and his mother's surname has been transcribed as Mills or Hook by different sources.

Nicholas had two known elder siblings, both also baptised at East Grinstead: Ediffe/Edisse bap. 19 Oct 1663 and Thomas bap. 25 Oct 1665. Thomas married Elizabeth Midhurst in East Grinstead in 1696 however no further records have yet been found that definitely relate to Thomas or Ediffe. Both of Nicholas' parents lived to see him marry and have children. No record has yet been found for his father Gualter's death, but his mother Margaret was buried in East Grinstead on 5 Oct 1706.

On 13 Jan 1699 Nicholas married Ann Taylor in Worth. They had eight known children, all baptised at East Grinstead:

Nicholas bap. 27 Sep 1699. Although no burial record has been found for him he must have died young because another son was christened Nicholas shortly afterwards
Nicholas bap. 9 Jun 1701. There is a possible marriage record for a Nicholas Card marrying an Ann White in Godstone (10 miles from East Grinstead) in 1733, however more evidence is needed to conclude these are the same person. He may be one of the Nicholas Card's buried in East Grinstead in Aug 1736/7 or Feb 1744/5 - both records just give the name and date without any more detail.
Anne bap. 8 Sep 1704, bur. "a young maid" 6 Nov 1720.
Edess bap. 24 Feb 1707. She married Robert Matthew of "Betsworth" (Betchworth) on 29 Sep 1731. The marriage was registered at Fleet Prison/Rules of the Fleet, a destination for weddings outside of the usual church rules, which normally required banns to be posted for three weeks prior to the marriage or a marriage license to be granted. Edess was likely the mother of a son John born out of wedlock and baptised in East Grinstead on 14 Dec 1729.
Walter bap. 10 Oct 1712. There are burial records in East Grinstead for a Walter Card bur. 24 Nov 1795 and a Catherine wife of Walter bur. 12 Jan 1794 who could be this Walter and his wife however no marriage record or records of children's baptisms have been found to corroborate whether this Walter stayed in the area.
Mary bap. 17 Jun 1715. She married George Creasey in 1738 and had at least 8 children.

It is not yet known when Nicholas or his wife died. There are a couple of possible burial records for Nicholas in East Grinstead in Aug 1736/7 or Feb 1744/5 however both records just give the name and date without any more detail so without further evidence it's not confirmed if one of the entries is for this Nicholas.

General history

East Grinstead was a busy town with a population of around 1,500 in the early 1700s. It was on the main road from Lewes (the county town of Sussex) to London and it had many inns which served the travelers.

Nicholas was baptised during the reign of restoration monarch Charles II and lived through the reigns of James II, William III & Mary II, Anne, George I, and George II.
