 Nicholas and Mary were married in Virginia and first settl ed in Rockingham County, Virginia . In the fall of 1784 the y left the Greenbrier colony ( then in Rockingham County) w ith their six children and moved to Tennessee, settling a f ew miles south of Knoxville. This was the area that was the n in what was called the state of Franklin, having once bee n part of North Carolina and then was on the frontier and s ubject to trouble with the Cherokee. In 1785 he built a gri st mill on Stock Creek in what was known as Greene County a nd in 1792 became Knox County. Soon the mill was fortifie d to provide safety from the Indian attacks for settlers i n the vicinity. Blount County was created from Knox Count y south of Knoxville in 1795 with "Bartlett's Station" lyin g on the county line. Nicholas owned a large amount of lan d and gave much of it to his children before his death. Hi s will took care of only those children who had not receive d gifts of land from him while he was alive. Nicholas was a ssociated closely with Jeremiah Pearce in Virginia. Four Ba rtlett daughters married Pearce men, apparently three of th em were brothers and one a cousin.
