According to a family diary that is copied and can be reviewed in the files

of the LDS library (written in French) the family were landholders in the Laon area of France and were titled. With the French rebellion the family fled for their lives. In the diary every entry ends with the sign of the cross. That could symbolize several things at the time possibly their catholic religion.
