Newman Jones was the son of Levi and Jane Florey Jones. He was born December 23, 1851, near Newtown. He was twice married. His first wife was Sophie Jane Clausen [sic]. To this union were born two children who are left to mourn his loss--Mrs. Elmer E. Peterson, and Jesse Jones. The former lives at Gary, Ind., and the latter lived with his father in Newtown.
In his early married life, he and his wife joined the Baptist church at Newtown, and together they started a Christian home. God called the wife to His eternal abode and left the husband with the two children, the youngest of which was 2_ years at the time.
Later in life Newman married again and his choice fell on Elizabeth Walen [sic]. A son was born to them whose name was Grover and who gave his life for his country in the Great War.
Mr. Jones spent the most of his life in and near Newtown, and carried the mail for eleven years. He was most devoted as a father, and his loss will be severely felt by Jesse the son. He has one half brother living in Crawfordsville, whose name is Bert Jones. --Fountain-Warren Democrat, October 8, 1931; photocopy courtesy Gary Purviance, Jan. 18, 2005
