When He Fires Revolver and Says Intruder Robbed Him, Parents of Tacoma Gir Oust Him
Tacoma, Wash., Jan. 5 (Special) - Miss Nellie Curtis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levander Curtis, 4838 South L street, was to have been married last night at the family residence to Gerald Gage, of Balboa, Cal., and the affair was to have been a social event of no small note in the South End. The wedding failed to take place, however, and today it developed that it had been declared off. Miss Curtis is prostrated with grief.
Discharging a revolver twice and shouting that he had been robbed of his wealth by a burglar who also tried to murder him, Gage created a scene about 3 o'clock yesterday morning that resulted in his ejectment from the Curtis home, and he has left the city at the request of the police.
The bridegroom-to-be made a confession to the police in which he admitted he had fired the shots and had faked the robbery story. He is said to have represented himself as wealthy when he came to Tacoma and the police are of the opinion that his sensational actions were part of a plan to reveal his true financial standings.
Gage is engaged in business in Balboa and has been acquainted with the girl since they were children. The engagement, announced a week ago, came as a climax to a long correspondence courtship. Several social affairs have been given in honour of Miss Curtis.
During his stay in Tacoma Gage lived at the Curtis home.
