Facts and Events
Started teaching in a one-room schoolhouse at age 17; graduated from Iowa State at Ames, roomed for a period of time with Carrie Chapman Catt (women's suffrage leader, co-founder of the League of Women Voters). lived in Greece, Chicago and Northfield with her daughter Ruth and family (1932-1946). Home-schooled my sister and me while we lived in Greece. She was abou 4'11" tall, an intelligent, articulate, perceptive and strong-minded woman. Of the many stories she used to tell us, one I remember is about the Civil War. She and her sister Tinnie speculated about what they would do if any Rebel soldiers ever appeared on their farm. They decided the thing to do would be to throw pepper in their eyes! from an unreferenced gedcom |
