Facts and Events
BIOGRAPHY: Pamphlet from Charles C. Whittier (author of Descendants) sent to Cora May Whitcher, with letter from him. "He settled at Salisbury, Mass., where he resided until his death. He took the Oath of Allegiance at Haverhill in 1677, and was admitted a freeman in 1690. Nathaniel purchased land in Salisbury in 1693 for mill purposes, but for some reason unknown at the present time, sold them the next year. He was a carpenter by trade and probably followed that vocation. Many of the descendants of this Nathaniel use the spelling of Whitcher and Whicher instead of Whittier, as it was by the first ancestor Thomas Whittier." BIOGRAPHY: Mr. Edward J. Whitcher, Jr. researched the Whittier family for many years. In 1995, he presented to a small library in New England extensive documentation on the family as descended from Nathaniel Whittier, the third son of Thomas J. Whittier. With his permission granted a few years ago now, I have incorporated much of that into my work, adding information where I could find additional facts. His research was based on submissions from many Whittier and Whitcher family members. The documentation sent to the library thanks in particular Edward LeRoy Whitcher, John Crawford Whitcher, Richard Rolfe Whitcher, Ruth Whitcher Hayward, Kenneth Everett Whitcher, William Whitcher, Perley Henry Whitcher, Chester Rand Whitcher, Sandra Whitcher Hair, and Eugene Rand Whitcher III.
