Capt. Nathaniel Tate, born 1752 Fredericksville Parish, Louisa Co VA, he signed the oath of allegiance Aug 30 1777 before Edmund Lyne Esq. and was a patriot, served as a Captain in the militia, joined Gen. Gates in 1779 in NC. William King stated he served under Capt. Nathaniel Tate of Bedford Co VA in 1778. He was a prosperous farmer and smitty, died testate, Russell Parish, Bedford Co VA, Aug 1805 married first Feb 22 1773 Rhoda Terry, a relative to Capt. William Terry, and sister of Susannah Terry who married Lt. Stephen Goggins, surety at their wedding. She [Rhoda] died early and he married second Jan 26 1778 Susannah Giliam, daughter of Richard and Mary Gilliam. Richard Gilliam's will Nov 9 1789 Bedford Co probated Apr 22 1799 wife Mary, children: Richard [Gilliam] Jr, grandchildren by Nancy Tate; granddaughter Polly Gilliam and granddaughter Elizabeth McGee. In 1788, they [Nathaniel and wife] settled in Russell Parish, Campbell Co VA. His will dated July 15 1805 Campbell Co, probated Sep 9 1805, children: Zachariah G, Nathaniel G, Henry F, Richard H L, Sally H Waldron, and Polly H Davis. I am at law [in a legal suit] with the executor of Richard Gilliam deceased estate, one half dozen cheese made by my brother Charles Tate and cherry table to go to brother Edmund Tate; grandchildren Betsy Waldron, Matilda and Susannah Davis, and John Tate. Executors brother Edmund Tate and [son] Zachariah G. Tate; witnesses William Patty, John Lewis Chews, and Samuel Poindexter. (Updike, 34)

Comment by AKB: Since no children seem to have been born after about 1789 when wife Susannah was only about age 31, perhaps she died shortly after 1789. She was not named in Nathaniel's will, so she had died before July 1805. She could have died as early as c1790 which would explain why there were no children after c1789.
