    Nathaniel was born in 1840, his mother's name was Ann. He had several brothers, John H. Smith, Thomas T. Smith, Benjamin Artemus Smith, Simpson Smith, George Washington Smith, and Jeremiah Smith. He married Marilla Sherwood at the age of 20, on August 15, 1861, in Franklin County, Indiana.

    He was 22 when he enlisted into the Union Army, one year after his marriage. While serving in Company C 68th Infantry Regiment Indiana Nathaniel became a casualty of war and died on January 20, 1864.
    He was laid to rest at Chattanooga National Cemetery (Section A, Site 21) in Tennessee on 30 January 1864.
