The 1906 Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Coles Co. says Nathan Ellington was shot and killed by his son-in-law, Adolph Monroe in October 1855...."as the result of of a little family disagreement, greatly augmented and stimulated by the fires of the whisky consumed by Monroe." Monroe was found guilty and sentenced to be hung but before that could happen a mob overpowered the guards, dragged him out into the streets and lynched him.
