Facts and Events
Name[1] Naomi Downing
Gender Female
Birth[1] Est 1590 Ipswich, Suffolk, England
Marriage to John Osborn
Death[1] Abt 1616

‘’Dawes-Gates’’ suggests that Naomi probably married Richard Hill and was the ‘’sister Hill” in the Winthrop papers. However, her sister Abigail married John Hill as a second husband, but this was unknown to those who have previously written about the family. Lucy (Winthrop) Downing (wife of Emanuel), in a letter from England dated 8 march 1635/6, to John Winthrop, Jr., mentioned “my brother Hill” and “my sister Hill.” In 1645 a Richard Hill wrote from London to John Winthrop, Jr. When these letters were published, the editor suggested that Richard was probably the “brother Hill,” of the earlier letter and married to a sister of Emanuel Downing. The only sister available seemed to be Naomi. But she had actually been deceased for years.”[1]

NAOMI DOWNING (George(B-C)) was born undoubtedly in Ipswich, co. Suffolk, say 1590. Her burial has not been found, but she died probably early in 1616, as two children were born to her after her 1613 marriage, and her husband married again in July 1616. She married at St. Lawrence, Ipswich, Suffolk, on 18 October 1613, JOHN OSBORNE.
