J. D. and Leoites were married by Jonah Strickland, Justice of the Peace, at his residence on Ginn Hill, just south of Royston, Georgia.

According to Leoites, she didn't want her cousin, Jesse Rice, Justice of the Peace, to marry them for fear he would try to pull a joke on them during the ceremony.

J.D. moved to Florida with some other men from Royston in the late 1930's looking for work. He found work picking oranges. Leoites joined him in Florida in December 1939. They moved back to Georgia in 1941 and ran the "Log Cabin" store/restaurant. When Leoites became pregnant, they left the "Log Cabin" and moved back to Florida where they remained.
