J. D. moved to Florida with some other men from Royston in the late 1930's looking for work. He found work picking oranges. Leoites joined him in Florida in December 1939. They moved back to Georgia in 1941 and ran the "Log Cabin" store/restaurant. When Leoites became pregnant, they left the "Log Cabin" and returned to Florida where they remained.
