Family lore says that her name was Nancy, but she was raised by the Lee family, who had a daughter named Nancy, so she was called Ann the rest of her life. It is rumored that she was raised by the Lee family because her mother, Sarah Hawkins Negus, had been persuaded by her gentry parents to come back to London after her husband Thomas Negus died. They never approved of their marriage because he was of a class beneath her.
