    This letter shows that Amanda was still living in 1899:
    "___-the 27 1899, smith to ten[?]Mrs. Amanda Givens

    "Dear sister, I will try to write you a few lines hoping it will find you all well. I have been sick all winter..am just able to be up now but I am improving..Nord? has been sick but is up now. Sister Nancy died the ? of November. My oldes son is in western ___; the youngest is at home now he is going to make a crop at home....times is hard here...we have had the worst spell of cold weather this month that we hove had in tenn years. I wish you would come to see me next summer. I am getting old myself in my 64 years [or 64th year]. Tell some of your boys to come and you come with them. I have not heard from uncle Hirum a long time. He never ansered my last letter. Do you raise oranges, lemons, and bananasa where you live. If so, how do they sell?...if not too dear I would send and get ____pounds of differnet kinds. Well rite as soon as you get this and let me hear from you. I will have to close.
