Gibson dies at hospital, Saturday night. Mrs. Nancy Ellen Gibson, 79, widow of Albert C. Gibson & former owner of the Gibson Home Laundry, died at 10:15 PM, Saturday in Mercy Hospital, where she had been a patient since March 6. In recent weeks, Mrs. Gibson resided with a nephew, Joe Driskill, of 1707 West Oak. Her home was at 615 North 14th. Funeral Services are to be at 2 PM, Tuesday at the Potts Funeral Home. The Rev. C.A. Shumway, Pastor of the First Assembly of God, will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Gibson was born on October 17, 1884, East of Nowata. She was the daughter of James G. & Mary E. (Jackson) Driskill. Her marriage to Albert Gibson took place on Sept 29, 1908 in Ft Smith, Arkansas. Ten years later they came to Independence to make their home. Mr. Gibson preceded his wife in death in Sept 1955. Survivors are an adopted daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Laura) Barbarick of Ft Scott, KS and 4 nephews, Joe Driskill of this city, John, Carl & William Driskill of Nowata, OK. A granddaughter and 2 great grandchildren also survive. Joe Driskill had been reared in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Gibson. Three brothers preceded Mrs. Gibson in death. Pallbearers at the Tuesday service will be Irvin Vandermark, Ivan Bracken, Harold Newmaster, Jesse, William & J.C. Clarkson. FEDERAL CENSUS 1890 Coowee-scoowee District, Indian Territory, Cherokee Nation Mary & children, James 15, Edmon 10, Nancy 6, & John 2 were living with her in-laws James & Nancy Driskill 1910 Nowata Co, OK (Armstrong Twp) BIBLE RECORDS: In possession of John Driskill of Independence, KS; of which I have zeroxed copies. NOTES: Aug 5, 1907--Nancy lived in Childers, OK where she received a love card from Ft Smith, Arkansas Sept 6, 1908--Nancy was single & living at 1118 North 14th St; Ft Smith, Arkansas. She had received a post card to this address. She was age 24. Sept 29, 1908 she was married in Ft Smith, Arkansas According to Laura Barbarick, Nancy worked at the Carlleon Hotel as a Chamber Maid in Ft Smith, Ark. She stated that Nancy met Albert in Ft Smith. This is not possible as the Gibson's lived in the Coffeyville--Independence area. She apparentley joined Albert in Ft Smith, Arkansas. Nov 11, 1910--Laura was with Nancy as there was a post card to them from Minnie Stierwalt in Bakersfield, CA. Dec 25, 1913--Nancy lived at 1911 South Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA. This was after her marriage to Albert Gibson. Nov 18, 1918--Mrs. A.C. Gibson of Independence, LeHunt, KS received a postcard from Bakersfield, CA (Minnie Stierwalt ?) CHILDREN: Although Nancy did not have any children of her own she did raise three. Albert & Nancy (adopted ?) Laura Williamson Gibson when she was 3. In 1919 Nancy's brother, Charles Edmond "ED", his wife, Ida & one son, James died in the Flu Epidemic, leaving 2 children, Nancy & Joe. For 1 year Nancy and Joe lived in Nowata Co, OK with Joe & Lee Ora Hicks (Joe was their mother's brother). At that time they went to live with Albert & Nancy Gibson, in Independence, KS to remain there until adults. PICTURES: Yes |
